Rune ABUSE!!

6313 Views 20 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  DillPickle311
Two days ago, I responded to a call in the quiet part of town. Afterwards I asked the homeowner/caller about the red motorcycle in their cul-de-sac. To my amazement she informed my that her neighbor last rode it in the summer of 2016 and then parked it. She stated that her neighbor brought the bike 15-16 yrs ago and it stays parked on the street...in the cul-de-sac. The bike owner has a 2 car garage, but leaves this big beautiful BEAST parked in the sun/rain/snow and ice!! At least he could put it in his garage during the winter!!! This makes me sad. Your thoughts???

Agree, very sad. This is the only bike I would sell my Valkyrie for. Make some enquiries - you might pick it up for peanuts if he cares so little about it.

Here is another Rune abuse. After they bought it they sold it on EBay for about $11,300
I was watching Bikes and Beards on Youtube and in one video they went to a dealership and bought a bunch of bikes. One of which was a Rune. After the sale he asked the salesman how much they paid for the Rune and was told @ $1500. You never know when you will hit a major deal.

In 1993 I bought a 1988 Buick LeSabre from a guy that was traveling out east when he stopped at my cousin's garage because of car problems. They gave him the news that he toasted his engine. The guy was not interested in putting in another engine and offered the car to anyone for $1100. No one had the money, so my cousin called me to see if I was interested. I was and brought the guy the money. I was able to get an engine for $800 and put it in myself. I put the car up for sale and a few days later a woman came by and bought the car. She traded me her 2WD 1982 GMC Jimmy and gave me $5600 for the Buick. I put her car up for sale and the next day a guy stopped and offered me $1200. I took it. All in all, for a $1900 investment I made $4800 in profit for a few hours work. I wish I could do that more often.

There is always a deal to be had somewhere. You may have stumbled on one.

The Rune is an eye catcher...

If available for purchase, you would need to see and ride this one. Since the owner has had it so long... even though out in the weather, you may not get a great deal like you think.

Owner does not want to let it go unless of course you have an offer he can't refuse. You have to consider the internal damage as well as the climate effect and if you're willing to make the effort to restore it. Go look at some others first and then decide.

I would not be that guy! I like my Rune-want-a-be. :D

One of my best deals was from a guy on Craigslist he triked his 1997 Valkyrie Tourer so he was selling the back half. Saddlebags, rear end, rim fender, blinkers, 2 sets of shocks, etc. I give him $450 and after I sold the parts I made over $1500 in profit.

Yes, it's a very nice neighborhood. We presently don't have a garage, but my War Goddess is resting in a climate controlled storage unit, with plenty of video cameras watching her sleep...until the temps reach 65deg and higher. If I where that guy, I'd have a monster yard sale just to make room for my Rune or ANY BIKE for that matter.

Great minds...
I was thinking the same thing, BUT I'm trying to figure out how to do it TACTFULLY. I don't want to just walk up and ring the owners doorbell, I'm not trying to freak him out!! I thought about waiting until the weather breaks and then ride my Valk down there, park about 15-20 feet away, light up a stoggie, keep my distance while looking at the Rune (providing he wasnt brought a NEW cover by then), and wait for him to come outside. If he doesn't come out, I'll leave my card with basic contact information on his front door. Well Geepers, what cha think of my warm weather plan???

As of RIGHT NOW, DillPickle311 is my NEW moral compass when it comes to ANYTHING bikes!!! That's all some good advice kind Sir, BUT if I ever took possession of a Rune...we would definitely need a garage and I wouldn't ride it if the chance of rain was greater than 0%!!! I really like the look of the Rune, but I really LOVE my Valkyrie aka 2 wheel Porsche...as my Harley buddies call it. Thanks again for the advice!!:cool:

I wouldn't wait until warm weather - the owner is more likely to get interested in the bike himself as the weather improves. Do it now while the bike is more likely to be a pain in the arse to him.

I'm afraid I don't have your patience to do the watch and wait thing though. I would just knock on the door and be up front about it..."I notice your bike doesn't get ridden much and wondered if you'd be interested in selling it?"

But that's just me. You have to do what feels natural for you...

Ok, for ALL parties interested - I was on patrol in Mr. Watkins neighborhood (the Rune) this Sunday and I stopped by his house. I did get the story behind the Rune. His late brother left him the Rune as well as a 60's Muscle car and exotic German sports car, which is the reason there's NO ROOM in his garage. He has already promised the Rune to his oldest son once he turns 21...he's 17 now. They're going to take the Rune to a relative's house soon because they have plenty of room in their 4 car garage. I hope his son knows what he's getting himself into, because the Rune is a BIG, BEAUTIFUL, LONG and POWERFUL work of art!!! Mr. Watkins last rode it in 2016 and it scared him so bad, he got home, parked it and covered it up. !!!NOT FOR SALE!!! Thank you #Geepers for the gentle nudge to talk to the Rune owner's Father, but it's still RUNE ABUSE!!!

Yep, just what a 21 year old kid needs to ride. It will probably be in the bone yard within a month of him riding it. What a waste.

The thing about the Rune ( even the new Valk) it's kind of a forgotten bike that at the moment is pretty underappreciated. Especially the Rune. That bike in 03 was like $30k out the door. Not many made it out to the road yet alone the number built. Hence guys leaving them out to rot like that.
I too would love one and maybe one might cross my path at the right time..
WOW!!! I drive by that Crofton 'stealership' every day on my way to work!! Great video...thanks for posting the link. I was going to use them (NO NAME) as my maintenance shop, but ALL of my riding buddies and a few coworkers told me that their SERVICE really sucks. I now go to Laurel for ALL things Valkyrie!!! The customer service there is top notch.
It’s virtually impossible to get replacement/repair parts for a Rune I’ve been told I hope he did not leave it our so long it got Rune’d LoL
