Hello,

I am picking up my new 15 Valkyrie next week and wonder what the owners manual says about oil viscosity to use. I can’t find a pdf copy online. I have a 2012 level 3 Gold Wing until Monday and it says I can use 1030 or 1040 and after break in I used Mobil 1 4T motorcycle oil in 1040. I have heard Honda has changed recommended oil now to 1030 and doesnt even mention 1040. Anyone have a pic of 14 or 15 Valkyrie owners manual page that addresses oil viscosity to use they can post? What are you using? I really want to use 1040 due to how hot it gets here in GA and the Valkyrie has the exact same engine as my 12 Wing and 1040 is an option for it so not sure why this changed. Things that make you go hmmmm.

Thanks,

Mark

10w40 is fine. All that really matters is that you aren't using oil that has friction modifiers in it (ie energy conserving) since they will cause your clutch to slip and possibly other problems.
Look for the SAE symbol on the package. This is the one you want to avoid
Notice how the bottom half of the symbol says energy conserving, that is bad.
I've used shell rotella t6 15w40 with no issues. I don't have a favorite brand to recommend, I just change my oil every 4-5k miles. The manual says after break-in, you can go 8k miles between oil changes but waiting that long makes me uncomfortable.

I have used, 10w40, 10w30, 15w40 and 5w40. All have been full synthetic and the Valk worked best on the 10w30 Lucas oil. The next best was Rotella T6 5w40. The Rotella is much cheaper, so that is what I went with this year. The Lucas was ridiculously expensive this year. Last year I got it for $6/quart. This year it was $13/quart. The difference in engine performance did not justify the extra cost IMO.

two thoughts

The 1832 is basically an automobile engine.
I have used MOBIL ONE 15-50 full syn in over 10 Valks and Wings and a dozen cars over the past twenty years. Houston is HOT and humid and the 15-50 works well. Not saying it would be as good elsewhere; but, here it is good.
