The final drive oil as from factory has moly from the gears mixed in oil.... hence the metallic look. The moly is actually good to have in there.......
I did 1800 mi in the first 2 wks of getting bike on 7-14-2018 .Changed final drive oil at 1140 mi (was very metallic looking!)- And engine oil, filter at 1485mi-Drilled tip of engine drain plug and pressed in a strong magnet when it was out! Did that on my st1300 yrs ago too!
I think the appropriate response is "D'OH!!!"The final drive oil as from factory has moly from the gears mixed in oil.... hence the metallic look. The moly is actually good to have in there.......
I think the appropriate response is "D'OH!!!"Seriously though, things are so high-tech now it's best to just follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Having said that, I still can't bring myself to leave oil for 12,000km …. will keep doing 5,000km oil changes. Unlike the example above it can't actually hurt. Yes, it's probably costing me more than is strictly necessary but that's a cost I'll gladly wear for the peace it gives me.
