The final drive oil as from factory has moly from the gears mixed in oil.... hence the metallic look. The moly is actually good to have in there.......

I think the appropriate response is "D'OH!!!" :) Seriously though, things are so high-tech now it's best to just follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Having said that, I still can't bring myself to leave oil for 12,000km …. will keep doing 5,000km oil changes. Unlike the example above it can't actually hurt. Yes, it's probably costing me more than is strictly necessary but that's a cost I'll gladly wear for the peace it gives me.

Changing oil at 5000km is the old way of thinking. Most vehicles these days can easily go 10000-16000km between oil changes depending upon the vehicle. The dealerships just push the 5000km oil change to make more money. Since I do about 10000km/year, I only do one oil change/year, but I do use a full synthetic oil (Rotella T6 5W40)

Also, I only changed my final drive at the recommended mileage. Honda puts in an additive to help break in the gears. I doubt that changing it will hurt anything though.
I agree. I change whatever needs to be changed according to the manufacturer's specs. If I ever have a problem, I'll be able to tell them I followed their recommendations. I use full synthetic as well.
I did the 2 fluid changes like I did Only for the first time service. My. st1300 shows first engine oil change as 600 mi- 4000 mi on the f6c-The metallic look to the fluids was not from additives! it was small metal particles from Normal new parts bedding in, Especially the [email protected] gear set.I have been a auto repair tech for almost 35 yrs-same for riding, owning bikes 35+ yrs
