I noticed a little bit of oily gunk around this bottom area of the final drive. Is that little port (pointing straight down) some sort of breather which might account for it?

I looked for it and did not see it in my diagrams. My guess is it may be that part is made on other models or used on other bikes and it serves as a drain for over flow. Perhaps if the final drive fluid expands too much due to heat it drips over the top of a level inside the case and drains around and down and out that hole. If it looks somewhat oily, i would level the bike best you can and then remove the fluid check/fill plug and be sure nothing comes flowing out.

When you at some point change the drive shaft oil if ever, you fill it till it starts to spill out. Very hard to overfill it unless the bike is on its side. Now im just sort of throwing this out there based on my experience with my 2014 Valkyrie.
