Previous GL1800 engines (2006 and older) used a mechanical style alternator drive gear that was prone to failure. Luckily in 2007 they switched to a fluid filled style which is more reliable.

It's good, because the only way to replace it is to remove the engine. Not the worst..... but quite quite a headache. A Goldwing without an engine is a sad sight...........

It looks like a Subaru engine basically. Like you'd think, mostly it's "disconnect hose here" and "unplug connection there." The worst part is taking all the other junk off the bike. Once the plastic is off things move quickly.
