When I got my VTX I had problems starting it when the temps dropped below freezing. At 18 degrees it was a crapshoot if it was going to start easily or maybe not at all. This is after I put a new battery in it. Fact is the new battery made absolutely no difference. So I did the research, located the cells I want, bought 4 of them and some copper plate and jammed it in the bike. Next morning it was 28 degrees and the bike started much easier. Spun noticeably faster and caught on the 3rd or 4th revolution. I thought this was great! So I ordered 4 more cells to double the CCA and wowser! .. that made all the difference.
On an 18 degree morning it spun almost as fast as if I had just parked after a ride.
I threw a cell balancer on it and never looked back. Havent touched it in 10 years and it is still spinning like mad when I hit the button.
DID I spend too much? 200 bucks for a battery I havent touched in 10 years and it still goes like gangbusters.
I dont think I spent too much.
Considering the price increase of stock batteries and the added CCA, longevity you gained...I would say no, you didn't spend too much.

If you can't be a good example, be a WARNING.

Now that's a pretty cool project. I wouldn't mind trying something like that for the learning experience and fun of it, but I'm a bit leery of the variables and precautions needed to properly operate one in our bikes. I know the chances of catastrophic failure are probably next to none, but when it happens to you the odds are thrown out the window. Just ask Elon Musk about all those Tesla batteries that failed and burned the cars to the ground for no apparent reason, and he knows battery tech. As for CCAs, my 2014 Valk has the original battery and it delivers in all weather conditions. I even run a 50 watt amateur radio transmitter on it, even with the bike not running and haven't noticed any degradation. Keep in mind that the battery and alternator in the Valk is overkill as nothing on that bike draws any current.

Now if I had an old beater bike I would definitely do what you did.
